ASI-J:Addiction Severity Index-Japanese

Introduction of the ASI-J

[Japanese]

The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is a semi-structured clinical research interview to assess severity widely in patients with alcohol and drug dependence.

The ASI was developed by research team centering on Dr. McLellan at Treatment Research Institute (TRI) in Philadelphia, U.S.A. Currently, the ASI has reached its fifth version and has been translated into various languages. In Japan, research team centering on Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science has developed Japanese version of ASI (ASI-J).

The average time required for administration was 90 min. The ASI is designed to assess problem severity in seven functional domains: Medical, Employment/Support, Alcohol use, Drug use, Legal, Family/Social relationships, and Psychiatric.

The ASI provides two types of overall scores for respective problem areas to rate the severity of the problem, including the composite score based on mainly items about current status in the patient and the severity rating by interviewer on a scale of one to ten.
