Kaori Endo (Mental Health Promotion) published a paper on "preference
for solitude, social isolation, and suicidal problems in adolescence" in Journal of Adolescent Health.
Social isolation is a risk factor of suicidal problem in adolescence. Recent studies suggested that preference for solitude was associated with negative mental health. In our school-based self-report questionnaire survey, we investigated the association with preference for solitude, social isolation, and suicidal problems. Responses from 17,347 students from junior and senior high schools were analyzed. As result, adolescents with a preference for solitude, particularly those who are socially isolated, are at increased risk of suicidal problems. These results suggest we should pay attention to socially isolated adolescents and consider support for them even if they say that they prefer solitude.
