講演要旨
Stress is the best known non-genetic risk factor for major depressive illness. While epidemiological data indicate that depression is a strong risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease, new research in animals suggests that depression and Alzheimer’s disease may share common etiopathological mechanisms. At the same time, we are gaining insights into how glucocorticoids, hormones secreted in response to stress, might be responsible for causing or exacerbating Alzheimer-like pathology. This talk will consider the possibility that timely and effective pharmacotherapeutic treatment of depression will decrease the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. It will also consider societal changes that may help reduce the burden of devastating neuropsychiatric illnesses.
